2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Today, more than 12,000 nuclear weapons still threaten our existence. They must be eliminated before they eliminate us.

Hiroshima Farm (2023)
Nuclear weapons are a fundamental threat to human rights and to life itself. Their use, testing, and production inflict catastrophic harm on people, societies, and the environment. The 1945 bombings instantly killed tens of thousands of civilians and left generations suffering from radiation-related illnesses, displacement, and trauma. These weapons indiscriminately destroy the rights to life, health, housing, and a safe environment — rights at the heart of international human rights law.

The consequences extend far beyond the initial explosion. Survivors and communities still face long-term health issues, environmental contamination, and social marginalization. The economic and psychological impacts persist across generations, disproportionately affecting women, children, and Indigenous peoples. The vast resources devoted to nuclear arsenals also undermine the realization of economic, social, and cultural rights worldwide.

A world free of nuclear weapons is not only a matter of global security but a moral and human rights imperative. Upholding human rights means defending the right of all people — and future generations — to live in peace, dignity, and safety.

On this International Human Rights Day, PROMEMORIA reminds us that art can awaken conscience and inspire the collective courage to turn this urgent message into lasting change.
